Foreword

I’m proud to launch this Model of Care – a testament to the transformative power of human connection. At its heart, this model reflects our belief that every man deserves the opportunity to be heard, understood, and supported through life’s challenges.

This approach captures the essence of what makes Mentoring Men unique: a strengths-based, peer-driven framework grounded in trust, respect, and purposeful conversation. It is more than just a program – it is a community movement that enables men to journey alongside one another, fostering wellbeing, resilience, and belonging.

Our model has been shaped by the lived experiences of our mentors, the voices of the men we serve, and the guiding principles of best practice. It is deeply aligned with national priorities in men’s health, and grounded in a preventative, non-clinical model that meets men where they are – early, authentically, and without judgement.

I would like to acknowledge the incredible work of Cassandra Gray, BBehavStud(Psych), BSocSc(Psych)(Hons), our Chief Operating Officer, who has led the development of this model with expertise, care, and unwavering dedication. Her contribution has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

We are committed to ensuring this model continues to evolve with integrity, evidence, and impact. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.

Our Model of Care

  • What is Mentoring Men?
Mentoring Men is a free, one-to-one life mentoring program that connects men with trained volunteer mentors. It’s not therapy or crisis support — it’s a real, relatable connection with another bloke who listens, supports, and helps you find your way forward.
  • Who can get a mentor?
If you’re a man aged 18 or over and looking for a bit of clarity, connection or someone to talk to — you’re in the right place. We support men from all walks of life — whether you’re feeling stuck, adjusting to a life change, managing stress, navigating relationships, or just feeling a bit lost. You don’t need a referral, and there’s no diagnosis required. You just need to be ready for a conversation. We’re best placed to support you if: You’re navigating everyday life challenges, big or small You’re feeling disconnected, isolated, or like you’re carrying a lot alone You want to reflect, set goals, and move forward in a healthy way You’re open to regular conversations with someone who’s walked a few hard roads of their own We’re not the right fit if: You’re in immediate crisis or need clinical intervention (but we’ll help you find the right support) You’re experiencing severe mental health symptoms that require specialist care You’re not currently in a place to engage safely or respectfully in regular conversations We work alongside the mental health system — not as a replacement for it. If your needs are more complex, we’ll do our best to guide you toward services that are better equipped, and when you’re ready, we’re here. “It’s not about fixing you — it’s about walking beside you while you figure things out.”
  • How does the mentoring process work?
Once you apply, we’ll get in touch to learn more about you — your background, your goals, and what kind of mentor might be a good fit. From there, we’ll match you with someone who shares your values or has been through something similar. You’ll meet regularly in a way that suits you — over coffee, on the phone, on a walk — and take it from there.
  • Is mentoring confidential?
Yes — 100%. Everything you share with your mentor stays between you, unless there’s a serious safety concern. It’s a judgement-free, safe space to talk.
  • How long does mentoring go for?
There’s no set end date — some relationships last a few months, others go longer. What matters is that you feel supported and heard. We check in with you both along the way to make sure it’s working well.
  • What if it’s not a good fit?
No stress. If it doesn’t feel right, we’ll work with you to find a better match. This is your journey — we’re here to make it work for you.

Acknowledgement of Lived Experience

We also acknowledge the individual and collective expertise of those with a living or lived experience of trauma. We recognise their vital contribution at all levels and value the courage of those who share this unique perspective for the purpose of learning and growing together to achieve better outcomes for all.

 Acknowledgement of Inclusion

At Mentoring Men, we’re committed to creating a safe, respectful space where all men feel welcome and able to be themselves. We value the diversity of our community — including sexual orientation, gender identity, culture, and lived experience.

We know that when LGBTQI+ men are respected and supported, everyone benefits. That’s why we actively foster inclusion, challenge stigma, and make room for real connection — without judgement, without exception.
